The attack at a mosque in Québec City on Sunday evening, resulting in the killing of six individuals is an alarming and tragic event that effects every one of us, particularly as it occurs in concert with America’s recent ban of refugees and others from predominantly Muslim nations.
CCWWP stands in solidarity with members of the Muslim community, and with all those who stand against violence, xenophobia, and all forms of hatred. We deplore this violence, and pledge to work towards the shaping of a literary community that values the safety, well-being, and inclusion of all its members.
We will not abide by an environment that stokes divisions and hostility based on race, ethnicity, religion, class, gender, or sexual orientation. We celebrate the diversity that strengthens our purpose as writers and educators, and take seriously our belief that education has a role in countering such violence.
We offer our heartfelt condolences to all victims and their loved ones in Québec and beyond.
